Jimmy was a flash man in a submarine. It was down deep very much. Jimmy had aware a lot. Suddenly, there was a tension. Men stared at dials intently. Then the floor tilted slightly, and after a while the sub leveled off and rolled a bit, like a huge log going under water. Jimmy drew in a deep breath and filled his lungs. He thought this was not bad, not bad at all. And Larry nervously swung his gaze around. “ Hey, we will be dead. Something’s going wrong! Get the Commander! You, Jerry, get to the radio shack. See if the sending equipment’s ok.”
Jimmy’s heart seemed to become a solid sickening weight. We could think jimmy’s aware. It was a death warrant! Jimmy stood there, shocked. Now, the water was up to his knees, rising rapidly. They could not close the heavy door. Larry turned a strained face toward him. The freezing water was up to jimmy’s waist. He wanted to scream and run. Because there were only minutes between him and a horrible death. Then he gave up. Nobody would ever know him. He had rushed out of the compartment to save himself from the rising water. He left his friend in the underwater. He gave up himself.
Suddenly, Commander Philips said “ Up and out on deck, everybody.” “What a rotten trick!” shouted Jimmy. He did not believe this was a just test. This is an important how you’d act in a life-and –death emergency. He failed to the test. He had not chance forever. But he would return to school. He would get experience a lot here.
